United Airlines Unveils CRJ-450 to Transform Regional Flying

Reimagined CRJ-200 Brings Premium Experience to Smaller Routes

But United’s newest regional jet, the all-new CRJ-450 with enhanced interiors from a retrofitted CRJ-200, is set to make an impressive entry into United’s regional fleet. The change is part of the airline’s larger strategy to update its small-jet fleet while improving passenger comfort on shorter flights.

The CRJ-450 will begin service in fall 2026 and will be operated by SkyWest Airlines under the United Express brand.

Designed for Small Markets with Big Comfort

United Airlines intends to use the CRJ-450 aircraft for flights from smaller airports to major airport hubs which include Denver International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The aircraft will feature just 41 seats which provide more space than standard regional jets to create a better high-end travel experience. The configuration exists to attract business travelers who frequently travel and seek comfortable seating during brief flights.

Premium Cabin Features Set New Standard

The CRJ-450 aircraft will have a special cabin for United First service which differs from the standard all-economy seating arrangement of the CRJ-200 aircraft. This addition marks a significant upgrade for passengers flying on regional routes.

The aircraft will have a spacious storage area situated at the front of the plane which will replace overhead storage compartments in the premium cabin area. The Economy cabin will feature enhanced overhead storage compartments which can hold standard-sized carry-on luggage, which is an uncommon feature for planes in this classification.

United has updated its interior design to match its mainline fleet, which creates a unified brand identity that passengers can experience during all their flights.

Starlink Wi-Fi and Modern Amenities

The CRJ-450 aircraft delivers its most impressive feature through its Starlink Wi-Fi system which provides high-speed internet access for the entire duration of flights. The service will be available free of charge to MileagePlus members, enhancing the digital experience for passengers. The addition of this service exists because airlines now view passenger connectivity needs as critical elements of their customer service approach.

Building on the Success of the CRJ-550

The CRJ-450 comes after the CRJ-550 launch in 2019, another modified regional jet with fewer seats and more parts for travelers who pay premium prices. United views the new planes as part of that strategy. The addition of more than 50 CRJ-450 and nearly 120 CRJ-550 jets by 2028 will mark a seismic shift in the carrier’s regional fleet.

Extending the Life of an Aging Platform

The CRJ-450 introduces an advanced method for extending aircraft operational time while satisfying modern customer requirements. United Airlines transforms its older CRJ-200 aircraft into upgraded models that deliver better performance and improved passenger experience instead of purchasing brand-new airplanes. SkyWest operates multiple CRJ-200 aircraft under the United Express brand which makes the CRJ-450 transition a reasonable next move for the company.

A New Era for Regional Travel

The CRJ-450 introduction brings United Airlines a new way to deliver regional travel experiences to its customers. The airline plans to provide passengers a private jet experience through its new service which combines comfort and connectivity with operational efficiency.

The regional aviation market faces growing competition which will establish CRJ-450 as a worldwide standard for airline operations.
