Major U.S. and Canadian Carriers Suspend Service Amid Safety Concerns

Several major North American airlines have canceled flights to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, Mexico, because of the unexpected outbreak of cartel-related violence which is currently happening in Jalisco State. Airlines including United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Air Canada, and WestJet suspended operations to the affected cities after security conditions deteriorated rapidly.

The flight cancellations follow a major military operation conducted by Mexican authorities targeting a senior leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of the country’s most powerful criminal organizations. The operation resulted in violent retaliation by cartel members, which created extensive security threats throughout the area.

Military Operation Sparks Widespread Violence

The unrest started when the Mexican Army conducted a military operation to capture cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes in Jalisco. The cartel leader sustained injuries during the operation and died during his transfer to a medical facility.

After the raid, cartel members started their coordinated assaults throughout various locations in Jalisco. Criminal groups established roadblocks through the theft and destruction of vehicles which included buses and trucks to block transportation routes. The attackers targeted multiple commercial establishments which included gas stations and pharmacies and banks and retail stores.

The violence resulted in numerous casualties which included Mexican National Guard personnel and cartel members and civilians. Authorities responded by sending more military and security forces to the area in order to restore order and protect vital infrastructure.

The White House confirmed that U.S. intelligence agencies provided support to Mexican authorities ahead of the military operation targeting the cartel leader.
