American Airlines Announces Return of Direct Flights from Colombia to Chicago

American Airlines will resume direct flights from Colombia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), an important connection for business professionals and leisure travelers in the Midlands. Service will begin on May 21, 2026, and is a significant expansion for American Airlines and the addition of new service connectivity options for travel in central South Carolina.

The airline will have two daily nonstop flights, seven days a week, flying travelers to one of the country’s busiest aviation hubs on a regular basis, according to airport officials. Tickets for the destination can be purchased from AA.com and on the American Airlines app.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity

Restored direct service between Colombia and Chicago is also part of American Airlines’ plan for increased travel connectivity from regional airports to the largest airports. Chicago O’Hare is a key hub in American’s global network, boasting service to 350 destinations, both domestic and international.

With the return of the service to CAE, passengers will no longer face connecting flight options through other hubs, allowing them to reach their final destination more quickly and conveniently. Corporate travelers, vacationers and international clientele are all expected to benefit from increased frequency service as well as the reliability of non-stop services.

Aircraft and Onboard Experience

American Airlines intends to serve the route with the 65-seat (including a First Class cabin) Embraer 170, its two class regional jet. The aircraft is rife in American’s domestic network, designed to cover short- to mid-haul flights that link regional markets with hub airports.

The Embraer 170 features a two-by-two seating configuration, which means there are no middle seats and it’s generally a more pleasant onboard experience than on larger narrowbody planes. The addition of First Class seats are for premium customers looking for a more deluxe offering on their regional routes.

Through the use of this type of aircraft, American plans to match capacity with demand and reduce fuel costs while providing customers a product that is consistent for those who connect through its hub at Chicago O’Hare.

American Airlines’ Commitment to Colombia

With more flights to CAE than any other airline, American Airlines already has a strong presence at Colombia Metropolitan Airport. The return of Chicago service complements the carrier’s commitment to serving the local market over the long-term.

American Airlines Director of Domestic Network Planning Jordan Pack made it clear why the route is so crucial in a statement, stating that the carrier is committed to providing increased access for local passengers out of Colombia. Connecting CAE to Chicago O’Hare allows for convenient access to American’s large network of destinations from its hub.

This decision also is consistent with American’s network strategy of offering frequent service between regional airports and key markets to create a high level of choice and flexibility for passengers.

Economic and Community Impact

Restoring non-stop flights to Chicago should also “bode well” for the local economy, Direct flights are key to business investment, tourism and corporate travel.

Chicago is a hub for business, finance, and culture, as well as the gateway for Colombia to national and international markets. It could be a good thing for local businesses, universities, and government agencies that could find themselves with a quick and reliable mode of travel. Tourism-wise, the route also aids visitors from the Midwest and elsewhere in getting to South Carolina’s capital region, boosting hotels, restaurants, and local attractions.

Chicago O’Hare’s Strategic Role

Chicago O’Hare is one of American’s most important hubs, an anchor of its North American and international business. The airport has connections throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia, serving as a key transfer point for travelers from markets such as Colombia.

American is able to increase feed into its hub structure, enhance aircraft utilisation and boost network resilience by resuming the CAE–ORD route. The extra space is also designed for summer 2026, a time of year when travel demand has historically been quite robust for American.

Passenger Benefits and Booking Availability

Daily multiple departure options for passengers on the Colombia-Chicago route offer flexible scheduling with same-day connections. In addition to business and holidays, that means a return of enhanced reliability and shortened travel times when traveling internationally.

Tickets are on sale now on American Airlines’ official channels, such as website and mobile app. Schedules and availability will become available closer to June, but travelers are encouraged to check in early to ensure they get tickets, especially for peak summer travel months.

A Sign of Continued Network Expansion

The announcement underscores American Airlines’ confidence in regional markets and its commitment to expanding air service where demand supports growth. As airlines continue to refine post-pandemic network strategies, routes like Colombia to Chicago demonstrate the value of strong hub-and-spoke connectivity paired with reliable regional service.

With nonstop flights returning in May 2026, Colombia Metropolitan Airport regains a critical link to one of the country’s most important aviation hubs, offering passengers improved access, convenience, and global reach.
