Iconic Jumbo Jet Returns With New Commemorative Design

Lufthansa has introduced a special 100th anniversary livery which will be used to paint one of its Boeing 747-8 aircraft. The jumbo jet known as D-ABYN and nicknamed Niedersachsen received the airline’s special paint design at a facility located in San Bernardino, California.

The aircraft now displays a dark blue exterior which features an oversized white crane logo that serves as a contemporary tribute to Lufthansa’s original emblem. The crane has long been associated with the airline and represents its legacy in global aviation. 

The 747-8i will leave the United States this week to make its way back to Munich. The aircraft will begin its first official operation after arriving in Germany with a nonstop flight that travels from Munich to Los Angeles.

A Major Milestone for Lufthansa

Growing Anniversary Fleet

The 100th anniversary design has already been applied to multiple aircraft beyond the 747-8i aircraft. The Munich Airport received two Airbus aircraft which had just completed their new paint scheme development work outside Germany.

The commemorative colors already appear on several aircraft which include an Airbus A350 and a Boeing 787-9 and another A320neo. The aircraft operate international and regional routes which enable passengers worldwide to see the special anniversary design.

Lufthansa will introduce an Airbus A350-1000 to its anniversary fleet later this year. The centennial collection will reach completion after that aircraft receives its paintwork.
